I do not know how many people know that the United States military was flying critically injured patients from Haiti to the United States to be treated. The United States military has now halted theses evacuation flights. Military officials said that they halted the flights due to several states refusing to take patients.
Hundreds of these Haitians have been sent to Florida to receive care. The governor of Florida Charlie Crist was baffled about the suspension due to the fact that none have been turned away from his state. Gov. Crist stated “We are welcoming Haitians with open arms and probably done more than any other state and happy to continue to do so" (USA Today, 2010).
But Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services for the United States, received a letter from Gov. Crist stating the state’s hospitals are reaching a breaking point. In this same letter he asked for federal assistance to help pay for the $7 million in expenses for the Haitians care.
It is not right for a state’s governor to spend the states money on people from another country. Especially when the state is all ready out of money, and many people in his state have to pay high rates for the same care the Haitians are receiving. Not to mention that many people do not have health care, but people coming from Haiti can come here and get this care for free.
Then Gov. Crist has the nerve to ask for federal assistance to help pay for the care. Does this governor not realize what is going on in our country? He wants the nation’s tax payers to pay for the help he wanted to give to the Haitians. Most people in this nation cannot afford to give their own families health care let alone having to pay for the Haitians health care. I know I do not want to pay for the health care for the Haitians when I do not have it for my own family.

David, I agree with you that it is not right for a governor to decide to spend ridiculous amounts of the states money when the state itself is already endangered. Although the Haitians are troubled, the governor should have given his citizens a choice if they each want to donate money or not. There are many ways to help the Haitians and the governor can promote donating instead of making a decision without giving his citizens a say in it. If the state did have money, I would understand that it is a good deed being done, but when a state does not help itself first, it cannot help others. I liked how you came onto this subject strongly and brought up your family because family is everyone's first priority before others. There were a couple grammatical & punctuational errors, but other than that I think your blog transitioned well. Great Job.

ReplyDeleteIts nice to hear that some people agree with me. I know if I still lived in Florida I would be piss off, that my tax money was being spent on Haitians instead of on the schools for my kids. I know the Haitians need help but there are better was of going about it. Thanks for the comment keep coming back for more I plan on having more posts.

ReplyDeleteDavid, I do agree with you and Dayna. The govenor had no right to ask for more money when he was already his own states money on the Haitians. I do think that they are in need of help but this govenor is going about it the wrong way. And if I lived in Florida and didn't find out about all of this untill after the fact I would be pissed too.
ReplyDeleteps. sorry it took me so long.

ReplyDeleteIt is fine I'm just glad you did it. I have family down in Jacksonville Florida and when I told them about the story it was the first they heard of it. My step father in-law was mad as hell. Because he has neighbors that can not afford health care for their families. This is the whole why I believe that the Governor was completely in the wrong in allowing this to happen.
